What We Do

The Ministry of Urban Exploration is a heritage-minded collective dedicated to the ethical discovery, documentation, and preservation of forgotten places in the UK and beyond.

In Occulta Quaerimus — We Seek the Hidden.

Our Purpose

A Collective Built on Curiosity & Preservation

We exist because places vanish. Every month, historic buildings are boarded, gutted, redeveloped, or demolished outright. The Ministry documents what remains — respectfully, discreetly, and with a clear preservation mindset.

Our members are trusted individuals who combine fieldcraft, research, and photography to build a lasting record of at-risk sites. We explore not for clout, but for the historical record.

  • 🗺️Organised group trips & exploration campaigns
  • 📸High-quality documentation & reports
  • 📚Research, archiving & preservation work
  • 🛡️Strict ethics — no forced entry, no theft, no vandalism
  • 🤝High-trust global community of explorers
Field Operations

Organised Group Trips & Expeditions

The Ministry runs carefully planned outings for authorised members, ranging from local audits to full-scale international trips. Every operation is risk-assessed, ethically conducted, and focused on documentation rather than adrenaline.

🇫🇷 France Exploration Week

One of our most recent major outings: a multi-day expedition across Northern France exploring industrial relics, historic institutions, and rural estates. Members worked in teams to photograph, research, and log each site for the Ministry archive.

🏭 Industrial Heritage Audits

From mills and factories to power infrastructure, we document sites at the edge of redevelopment. Floor plans, machinery, and original features are captured before they are stripped out or demolished.

🏰 Historic & Institutional Sites

Victorian hospitals, stately homes, schools, transport hubs and civic buildings — we focus on locations that tell a story about social history, architecture, and community memory.

All official trips follow the Ministry Charter: no forced entry, no theft, no vandalism, and no public disclosure of sensitive access information.

Archive Work

Documentation, Archiving & Research

Exploration is only half the work. Every authorised outing feeds into a growing internal archive designed to be useful long after physical access has ended.

📸 Structured Documentation

Members submit curated photo sets, site notes, and condition reports. Where possible we record floor layouts, key features, and any evidence of change or damage over time.

📚 Historical Research

Our Archivists investigate ownership history, planning records, news coverage, architectural style and local folklore to build context around each site.

🗄️ Long-Term Archiving

Material is organised, tagged, and preserved so it can support future research, heritage campaigns and public interest in the stories behind the locations we visit.

Ethics & Safety

Ethical Urban Exploration

The Ministry operates under a strict ethical framework. Membership is contingent on respecting both the places we visit and the communities around them.

  • No forced entry. No cutting, prying, smashing, or bypassing locks or alarms.
  • No theft or removal. Artefacts and fixtures stay exactly where we find them.
  • Minimal trace. We close what we open, avoid disturbance, and pack out waste.
  • Location hygiene. Sensitive access information is never shared publicly.
  • Safety first. Risk-aware behaviour, proper kit, and no reckless stunts.
Membership

What It Means to Be Part of the Ministry

⭐ Trusted Community

You’ll work alongside like-minded explorers, archivists and researchers who value discretion, accuracy and respect over social media clout.

🛠️ Skills & Development

Members refine their photography, research, writing and risk-assessment skills through shared projects, feedback and mentorship from more experienced explorers.

From suggesting sites to shaping documentation standards, members help guide the direction of the Ministry’s work and upcoming expeditions.
